Now I’ve got a test sequence in Luma Fusion with two 4K clips from two different cameras, and the two 1080p slow-mo clips, and everything seems fine. This time, when I connected the camera to the iPad, the 4K clip was there, and I was able to import it without an issue. So I disconnected the camera, switched it on, formatted the card, and re-recorded a fresh 4K clip. In the past, I’ve run into issues with cameras that don’t like (or can’t play back) multiple size/resolution clips on the same card. Only the two 1080p clips showed up in the import window the 4K clip wasn’t being seen by the iPad. I had three clips on the card: one 4K 24p clip, one 1080p/240FPS slow-mo clip, and one 1080p/120p clip. Next, I connected the Sony RX10 II via it’s micro-USB cable. My 4K clip showed up in the import window, and I was able to import it without an issue. First I hooked up my Leica D-Lux to it via the included USB cable. Today I went to Apple and picked up a new USB 3 Lightning Adapter.

I filmed clips from both cameras, then tried to load clips to my iPad Pro 10.5” with the Apple SD Card Reader to Lightning Adapter.

I’ve also got a Leica D-Lux 109 point-and-shoot that also films 4K at 24p (in h.264). In the 1080p modes, you can also shoot 240fps slow-motion (in 2 second bursts), and 120p (which can be recorded continuously, and then be slowed down to whatever slow-mo rate you want). I’ve got a Sony RX10 II, which shoots XAVC-S in 4K and 1080p. I was wondering about this same compatibility issue. I have an iPad Pro 12" but also tried on my iPad Air 2 and it worked. Works well and the reader is pretty fast at copying. I select the files I want to import then add them to the camera roll.įrom there, you can use the files like any other video on the iPad.view them, import them into iOS iMovie, etc.

This is where the XAVC-S 4K files are stored (they're saved as MP4 files). Launch the app (in this case, it's called iDiskk Pro) then navigate to PRIVATE/M4ROOT/CLIP subfolder. I plug the SD card into the reader then plug the reader into the iPad. It also needs to be able to copy files to the camera roll on the iPad. The trick to the process is the card reader needs an app that supports file browsing through all folders on an SD card. I'm sure there are others but this was $20 and had 4.5 star rating. I bought an "iReader" Lightning to SD card reader made by YKSH from. However, XAVC-S uses an MP4 wrapper (creates mp4 video files) which the iPad can play and you can extract them using a 3rd party lightning to SD card reader. The Apple USB adapter is problematic because of power issues between the iPad and the camera. [/It is possible to import 4K Sony XAVC-S footage directly into an iPad Pro but the process requires a few extra steps and a 3rd party SD card reader.Īs you know, Apple doesn't directly support the XAVC-S file structure (as of iOS10) so you can't use the Apple SD Card reader.
